“Reality: Having SOME Lower Ab Fat Is NORMAL”

What’s going on guys, Sean Nalewanyj, SeanNal.com, and today
I want to talk a bit about lower ab fat, and the fact that, despite a lot of the pictures you see on instagram or in magazines or advertisements, unless you’re competing and/or you’re dieting down to very low levels of body fat for a temporary period, having some visible lower ab fat is normal for pretty much everyone.

I get a lot of questions about this where someone will tell me that they’ve been in a cutting phase and have leaned down their entire body and are happy with their results, but they still have that last bit of lower belly fat remaining that they can’t seem to get rid of.

Like I’ve talked about many times before, it’s not possible to “spot reduce” and to target fat loss from specific areas of your body, and so the only way to reduce that lower belly fat is by reducing your
overall body fat percentage as a whole. And the truth is that it’s actually very difficult to get your body fat percentage down low enough to where that very lower portion of your stomach is
perfectly flat.

The vast majority of people will hold onto that last bit of abdominal fat unless they’re very, very lean, in which case they probably won’t be able to maintain it over the long term anyway unless they’re an extreme genetic outlier or they’re using drugs to help out.

Can you get an impressively lean and muscular body without side effects? Yes. Can you have visible six pack abs? Yes. For most guys, hovering somewhere around 10% body fat would be possible without side effects assuming they’re willing to put in the work for it.

However, this idea that you’re going to be a permanently shredded 7% body fat with ripped lower abs all the time is just not realistic, and even 8% properly measured on a DEXA scan won’t be possible for most guys if they want to maintain optimal health. Even 10% is pretty low for that matter if we’re talking about a true measurement, and probably 11% or 12% will be more realistic on a year round basis.

Your body is a survival machine and it’s meant to carry a certain amount of body fat/abdominal fat for proper functioning. The leaner and leaner you get, the harder and harder it becomes to get increasingly leaner. And as you push that boundary further and further and try to maintain it for any real length of time, you will start running into side effects, which is just your body’s way of protecting itself and trying to restore balance.

Your energy levels will decrease, your hunger will increase, cognitive function will decrease, sex drive will decrease – these are just a few things that happen as you drop your body fat into those very low levels in attempt to lose that last bit of lower ab fat.

You certainly can have a defined midsection and relatively lean lower abs if you’ve determined that it’s really worth it for you, but again, having shredded six pack abs from top to bottom with no visible lower ab fat just isn’t going to happen for 99% of natural trainees year round.

Again, keep in mind that there are diminishing returns with this. So, going from, say, 16% body fat down to 12% might take the same amount of effort as going from 12% to 10%, and that might take the same effort as going from 10% down to 9%. So, you really have to take a look at your life as a whole and decide what amount of effort and sacrifice is really worth a particular result for you.

But, bottom line guys, unless you’re competing or you’re getting temporarily very lean for whatever reason, having some visible lower ab fat is normal and it’s probably not going to disappear completely.

If you really truly want to get that lower belly fat down to the lowest level possibe then that’s up to you, but for most guys on a year round basis, going lower than 10% body fat is probably not realistic without side effects, and at 10% and above, you’re still going to have some lower ab fat, and that’s just the way it is.

  1. Hey Sean, I'm currently 6'1", 177lbs., and at 7% body fat. What's frustrating is that the only place I have any visible body fat is my lower abs! Solution please, cause I don't wanna lose anymore weight! Thanks 👍

  2. "Not really worth the trade off. Especially considering I spend most of the day walking around in a T-shirt anyways" Awesome man!

  3. Sean, I hear you! I had a baby and I'm a small woman, but my stomach is fat. I had a c section not sure if that matters. I workout, but I have more than a little belly fat. What can I do?

  4. Thanks, was currently looking at sitting around 10% but il rethink it prob 12 is more realistic

  5. Worth noting that even those guys in instagram photos, are taking them with great cameras under perfect lighting conditions, flexing hard and often even go to extra lengths if it's a modeling shoot, like consuming little sodium or water hours before the picture, not eating much of anything for that empty flat stomach, and so on.

Take someone at 10% bf and put him under those conditions and he will look absolutely shredded. Not bodybuilding competition shredded, but still insane. But then take that same guy, have him eat a meal, use a normal phone camera under normal light without much flexing, and voila, there will not be anywhere near the same definition, and there'll be a tiny amount of lower body fat left.

It's just worth considering, your ultimate physique won't even be 100% that way during the same day. The body is very dynamic.

  6. Do people (with six pack) have belly fat when they're sitting?
Sean, it would be nice if you could take off your shirt and show us when you're sitting – so we could get the idea.
And of course, as I don't have six pack, so I couldn't simply answer this question myself.
    Thanks.

  7. how to accurately measure body fat? is it possible to be done at home or I need high-tech methods?

  8. Thank you man for such a video. And thank you for being realistic in your talk. People need to know that what they see on social media is just a temporary thing. No body can stay lean forever. 👍🏻 thanks again

  9. Most of the time you are clothed and no one sees your abs, except when having sex, but women don't give a crap about stomach fat if you're otherwise in good shape. I have no interest in ripped six pack abs. I have a visible four pack all the time. As long as you have moderately big shoulders, traps, and legs, you'll look awesome. It's a waste of time and it's unhealthy to diet down that low to have six pack abs all the time, especially for beginner-intermediate lifters. Bottom line: forget about the six pack abs and build all the visible muscles. Cheers !

  10. It really irritates me to no end when I see all of these get abs quick schemes when the only way to get abs and look ripped is by losing that layer of fat on top of the muscle. How many thousands of dollars have been lost by bs infomercials that promise visible abs just by taking a damned pill? I know I've wasted hundreds of dollars this way, until you woke me the hell up!!

  11. Yup i fucked my hormones, and immune system in the summer
Needed 6 months till now to recover.. i've gained 10 kgs, and i look much better now with some fat
